It was time to rise and shine this morning for the first day of school at Epiphany! New Head of School David Wang was one of the first ones on campus to do a live interview with WCTI Newschannel 12. We are so grateful that reporter Deja Mayfield was able to join us on both campuses to see how excited our students, teachers, and administrators are to return - from the youngest new falcons taking pictures with the bear for the first time all the way to our next senior class, which was recognized this morning at Gathering. Wishing for a wonderful start to the school year today for everyone! We're so glad to see our students return. Check out WCTI at noon and this evening to see more.

We love to see our students out helping others in the community on their summer break! Epiphany middle schoolers Emma, Elin, and Kate hosted a bake sale in Trent Woods to raise money for RCS. They sold homemade brownies, cake pops, cookies, muffins and popsicles — raising $529!

We can't say thank you enough! After nearly a decade serving as Head of School at The Epiphany School of Global Studies, Dr. Dwight Carlblom is retiring today. Dr. Carlblom was selected for the position by the school Board in 2014, which was led by Nicholas Sparks at the time.
Dr. Carlblom brought the school through a period of significant growth and development. By the end of his second year, he helped ensure Epiphany was no longer dependent on any one person to financially support the school. He developed the Arts and Athletics programs that are now providing excellent opportunities for Epiphany students. Dr. Carlblom also helped create a college-prep program that would build a reputation strong enough for students to attend five different Ivy colleges/universities as well as West Point and Annapolis.
Dr. Carlblom led the school through two SAIS accreditation visits resulting in excellent reviews and recommendations aligned with their already determined five-year strategic plans. He developed a strong Learning Services program serving more than 50 students, and he represents Epiphany as a Board member of the New Bern Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Carlblom was raised on a grain farm in southwest Minnesota. He received a BA in History from Crown College in Minnesota and an MAT in History from Minnesota State University in Mankato. Three years later, Dr. Carlblom and his wife, Lori, were invited to teach at Dalat International School in Penang, Malaysia, where they stayed for 22 years.
Before coming to Epiphany, Dr. Carlblom also taught and worked as an administrator in
Daejeon, South Korea; Crown College, MN; and Seoul, South Korea, where he finished earning his PhD. In the summer of 2014, the Carlbloms moved to New Bern. The couple plans to stay in the area.
Dr. Carlblom plans to continue working in a part-time position here in New Bern. He is now a Board member of Craven Literacy Council, and he hopes to take on a few more positions as he settles into retirement. Dr. Carlblom and his wife have two daughters and six grandchildren.
Enjoy your next ' journey,' Dr. Carlblom. You will be missed, and we hope to see you in the hallways often.

Shark Campers are in full swing this week learning about a shark's anatomy, typical shark characteristics, and different types of sharks. We've played shark related games, sang shark songs, and gone shark tooth hunting! It's shark-tastic!

All of our teachers at Epiphany are exceptional, but two were recognized today with the Paideia Award. Paideia means "training of the physical and mental faculties in such a way as to produce a broad enlightened mature outlook harmoniously combined with maximum cultural development." On the Lower School campus, art teacher Liss Corona was recognized for the joy she brings to her art students, the hard work she put into creating a student news channel, the creative drama elective she taught in the Fall, and her commitment to the after school program. Choral Music/Concert Band/Music Theory teacher Mabel Rosney was given the prestigious award on the Trent Campus. Mabel created two new programs this year on top of continuously inspiring her singers. The growth of her brand new concert band was amazing to watch throughout the year - she even started a pep band! Thank you to Liss, Mabel, and all of our staff for working so hard this year.

We're a little late posting these, but the Arts Department at Epiphany has been busy! The ArtWalk Pop Up display featuring work by our visual arts students was a huge success. Hundreds of visitors came to the Harrison Center to enjoy art created by all grades, K-12. Special thank you to Christ Church for allowing us to use their beautiful space. And thank you to all of our visual art teachers - Liss Corona, Jodi Tomboulian, and Julie Larick - for spending so much time preparing the displays. We are so grateful to have such creative, passionate, patient, caring teachers!

The celebration of Dr. Carlblom's time at Epiphany continued this morning at Chapel. Students from the Lower School were brought over to join the Trent Campus as we listened to speeches, watched a funny slideshow, and gave hugs to Dr. Carlblom.
